My grocery basket, one year on is a free calculator that lets you pick the items you buy often, then compares the most recent survey day's national average retail price in Korea (the survey date is shown on the tool) with the price of the same items a year ago (or a month ago) and shows the difference in won and as a percentage. Prices come from KAMIS agricultural market information, run by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (data.go.kr dataset 15156057). It also shows an annual figure — the difference multiplied by 12, assuming you buy the same basket every month — on the year-ago basis.
What does the grocery basket calculator actually work out?
It puts two totals side by side — your quantities at today's prices, and the same items and quantities at the comparison-date prices — and reports the gap between them. You choose from 15 items and set each quantity between 0 and 99, with four presets: a staples basket (eggs, rice, napa cabbage, onions, mackerel — 5 items), a summer table basket (5 items), all items, and clear. The result appears as the two totals, the difference in won, and the percentage change; when the year-ago basis is selected, an annual figure — the difference multiplied by 12, assuming you buy the same basket every month — is shown as well. Above the builder, the tool lists up to the top three items that rose and up to the top three that fell.
Where does the price data come from?
Prices are national average retail prices from KAMIS agricultural market information, published by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation and retrieved through the Korean public data portal's open API (data.go.kr dataset 15156057), then baked into the site. The survey date is printed on the tool itself and in the source line at the bottom, so you can see which day the prices refer to. Eggs use supplementary figures from Statistics Korea and press reporting (June 2026), and pork belly from KAMIS and press reporting (June 2026); both sources are stated at the bottom of the page. Every figure is an average estimate for a fixed unit and grade.
How is 'vs last year' different from 'vs last month'?
The year-ago basis compares today with the same period one year earlier, while the month basis compares it with prices from roughly one month before. The two answer different questions: a year covers a full turn of the seasons, whereas a month reflects short-run movements such as recent harvest volumes or weather. Items with no month-ago figure are marked as having no monthly data and are left out of the totals on that basis. The annual figure appears only on the year-ago basis.
Can I save or share the result, and is my input stored?
You can download the result as a 1080×1080 PNG card (my-grocery.png) or copy the tool page link to share it. The items and quantities you pick are calculated inside your browser only; they are not sent to any server and are not encoded in the shared link. The site records anonymous counts of how many times the page was viewed, a link was copied, and a card was saved — never which items you selected. Separately, a cookieless visit analytics service (Cloudflare Web Analytics) counts page views; in neither case are the items and quantities you picked sent anywhere. No account or sign-in is required, and no personally identifying information is collected.
Frequently asked questions
Why does this differ from what I actually paid at the store?
Because the tool uses national average retail price estimates. For the same item, the price you pay varies by region, store, grade, and whether it was on promotion. Treat the figures as a reference for how prices moved on average, not as a reconstruction of your own receipt.
How are the annual figure and the 'about X fried chickens' comparison calculated?
The annual figure is the one-month difference multiplied by 12. It assumes you buy the same basket every month, so it will differ from your real yearly spending. The everyday comparison divides that amount by fixed reference values built into the tool: 20,000 won for one fried chicken, 4,500 won for a cup of coffee, and 950 won for a pack of instant noodles (the comparison is shown in Korean on screen).
How many items can I choose, and what quantities?
There are 15 items, and each quantity can be set from 0 to 99. Four presets make selection quicker: the staples basket (eggs, rice, napa cabbage, onions, mackerel), the summer table basket (5 items), all items, and clear. You can still adjust individual quantities after applying a preset.
Does it tell me whether I qualify for the government's food discount support?
No. The tool calculates KAMIS national average retail prices (with supplementary sources for eggs and pork belly), not discounted prices. The Korean government announced on 13 August 2026 that it would support discounts of up to 50% on major agricultural, livestock and fishery products through the Chuseok peak season, but which items are discounted, at which stores, and by how much must be checked through the official notices and the retailers themselves.
What this tool does not do
This tool does not determine eligibility for anything. It does not calculate any particular store's shelf price or your actual spending, it does not forecast future prices, and it does not tell you whether a government programme such as discount support applies to you. The figures are reference estimates based on KAMIS national average retail prices in Korea (with supplementary sources for eggs and pork belly), so any support programme or discount must be confirmed through the relevant official channel. The items and quantities you enter are processed in your browser only and are never sent to a server.
